From the Mainframe to the Metaverse

A brief history of IT and information security — and why securing what we create matters more than ever.

The computing sector has undergone extraordinary transformation in under a century. Society progressed from isolated mainframes — massive, centralized computers serving entire organizations — to contemporary visions of interconnected digital worlds. The 1970s and 1980s revolutionized accessibility. Computing devices entered homes through IBM, Microsoft, Apple, and Commodore. Graphical interfaces and intuitive operating systems democratized technology across populations.

The birth of the Internet

American researchers developed ARPANET — the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network — the Internet's precursor. Within two decades, this military network evolved into a global space for communication and commerce. Email and websites created the information society, though introducing unprecedented challenges regarding trust, identity, and data protection.

The initial digital threats

Interconnectedness generated novel security dangers. A 1971 program named Creeper represented the first computer virus. While initially curiosity-driven, viruses like Brain and Michelangelo caused tangible damage by the late 1980s.

IT security emerged from necessity. Organizations developed antivirus programs, firewalls, and encryption. The 1990s prioritized data protection as electronic commerce expanded.

Contemporary information technology underpins global economics — banking, healthcare, education, and transportation all depend on digital systems. However, ransomware, espionage, and data theft proliferate.

A look into the future

Information technology's narrative encompasses a story of adaptation, courage, and responsibility. From nineteenth-century mechanical devices to contemporary networks, computing became civilization's cornerstone. As data volumes expand, protective responsibilities intensify.
